With summer coming, the reality show The Fabulous Beekman Boys is a welcome addition (part of the Discovery Network’s Planet Green channel lineup). Now in it’s second season, this is a fun reality show about farming in upstate New York. What makes it charming is the fact that the new farm owners are a gay couple from New York City who are learning as they go in the world of farming. What makes it a cringeworthy for me is that they bicker . . . a lot. The couple (Brent and Josh) has great chemistry but very different personalities that cause conflict and for those who enjoy it, dramatic tv. Brent is the uptight one who is in charge of everything and runs the farm and Josh is the more laid back one who works in New York and comes to the farm on weekends. Josh always wants more say in how the farm is run, but Brent is the boss. This makes what could be a slow moving show about learning to farm, more interesting and watchable.
The characters are relatable, funny, and down to earth. I had to laugh when Brent got upset because the tractors weren’t lined up neatly outside or when neither of them knew how to catch a goat that had gotten loose on the property. They have a farm manager who is a longtime overalls-clad farmer who acts as the perfect foil to their Big City gay man antics. The farm is beautiful and this season they’ve expanded their product line. You feel as though you’re learning and laughing with the Beekman Boys even if you might feel slightly superior because you would know better than to wear Gucci loafers in the fields.
